اساس عملکرد یک جاروبرقی خلاء ایجاد شده در فضای درون و اختلاف فشار با محیط پیرامون آن می باشد. پمپ مکش جاروبرقی مسئول ایجاد این خلاء بوده و قدرت و سرعت مکش دستگاه وابسته به آن می باشد. نیرو محرکه این پمپ توسط یک موتور تأمین می گردد. برای ایجاد قدرت مکش بالاتر نیاز به است.فاده از پمپی با قابلیت ایجاد خلاء بالاتر می باشد. دستگاه های جاروبرقی خانگی و نیمه صنعتی دارای پمپ های مکش سانتریفیوژال و سانتریفیوژآل تقویت شده می باشند. دستگاه های جاروبرقی صنعتی غالبا مجهز به پمپ های سایدچنل و ونتوری بوده و در دستگاه های مکنده صنعتی نیازمند خلاء نسبی بسیار بالا از پمپ های لوبه (lobe) و بلید (blade) است.فاده می شود. کاربرد پمپ قدرتمندتر در جاروبرقی مستلزم بکارگیری موتور قوی تر می باشد. در نتیجه با حرکت از جاروبرقی خانگی و نیمه صنعتی به سمت جاروبرقی صنعتی نوع موتور از کلکتوری و کلکتوری تقویت شده به توربینی تغییر خواهد کرد.
