  ساختار ریز منافذ کربن در دمای در حدود ۵ درجه سانتیگراد شکل می‌گیرد. بعضی از این منافذ به‌وسیله ماده قیری آزاد شده در حین فرآیند پیرولیز مسدود می‌شود که می‌توان با حرارت دادن مجدد در ۸ درجه سانتیگراد دوباره این منافذ را ایجاد کرد. افزایش دما تا درجه سانتیگراد و بیش از آن باعث سخت شدن ساختار کربن و کاهش درجه تخلخل می‌شود.

  تکنولوژی تولید الیاف کربن فعال شده ترکیبی از تولید الیاف کربن به‌علاوه مراحل فعال‌سازی آن می‌باشد. تا هنگامی‌که خصوصیات مکانیکی بالا مورد نیاز نباشد ترجیح داده می‌شود که الیاف کربن با ساختار آمورف تولید شود. بنابراین فرآیند تولید الیاف کربن فعال شده شامل توسعه الیاف کربن آمورف در دمائی در حدود درجه سانتیگراد صورت می‌گیرد. در الیاف کربن حاصل از قیر می‌توان بالاترین مساحت ویژه‌ای در حدود ۵m^/g و بیشترین حجم میکرو منافذ در حدود / ml/g را به‌دست آورد
